Our Style Icon for the week: Ms. Chanel Iman Robinson. At only 24 years of age, Chanel Iman is already a veteran Victoria Secret Angel. She is one of the youngest most successful African-American High-Fashion models of her time. She’s worked with countless world renowned photographers: Steven Meisel, Annie Leibowitz, Tom Munro and Kayt Jones, just to name a few. She’s graced the covers of magazines all over the world: Muse, Teen Vogue, Elle (UK)(Italy), Vogue (Korea) and Flare (Italy)(Canada). If that doesn’t impress you, she has walked for some of the top designers in the world: Christian Dior, Valentino, Balenciaga and Oscar de Larenta. In 2009, she was the first African-American model to walk for Gucci in 8 years. Chanel has been breaking down diversity barriers on the runway since the start of her modeling career. Now, Chanel is adding another component; actress. Defying the stereotype of just another pretty-faced model, Chanel makes her debut as Lily in the new move Dope, which premiered in June 2015.
Chanel’s character is a crazy rich girl, with a taste for MDMA and nudity. She describes her role in Dope as the complete opposite of herself, saying that Lily is a “free-spirit” and “wild”. So wild that a major portion of this role was in the nude. Chanel stated that having to “take it all off” wasn’t something she felt uncomfortable doing, rather she was Channeling her inner “wild child.” Chanel Iman has now officially joined the ranks of Angels turned actress like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (Transformers: Age of Extinction), Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica), and Rebecca Romjin (X-Men).
We’re looking forward to what’s next. Whatever she does, it’s Dope! And the reason she’s number one on our style watch at KingstontoLA.
