Pretoria SOUTH AFRICA – Embattled Paralympian Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to five years in prison following a verdict of culpable homicide on Septemebr 11. The athlete learned his fate early Tuesday, after the conclusion of a lengthy murder trial in the shooting death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.
Judge Thokozile Masipa handed down her final decision in the matter, citing her obligation to society to send a clear message of justice as one mitigating factor. The athlete was also given a sentence of three years, wholly suspended, for a lesser charge of discharging a firearm in public.
There has been no indication of appeal from either side, with prosecutor Gerrie Nel conceding the court had done it’s duty.
In a trial that garnered an overwhelming amount of attention toward the South African justice system, the conclusion is not the most satisfying outcome for many. “Nothing is going to bring her back,” lamented Steenkamp’s best friend Gina Myers, according to ENCA news. “No matter how u wanna see it, Oscar has beat a murder charge.” tweeted Kwabena @GuYozy.
Pistorius was immediately taken into custody where he may have the possibility of an early release. With Pistorius behind bars we hope Reeva’s family will gain some sort of closure. Do you think justice for Reeva has finally been served?’
UPDATE : The National Prosecuting Authority has since announced their decision to appeal.
