In the movie Crash, people in the City of Angels rarely meet or interact, until they "crash" into one another. This is an outdated take on Los Angeles. Los Angeles is a place where people connect and find one another; discovering their mutual interests, and collaborate. This is how we came to know DJ Sophenom.
DJ Sophenom is a resident DJ/MC on LA's renowned Power 106 radio station and part of The Flava Unit. Just in time for summer and bridging the gap from KingstonToLA, Sophenom released her brand new KingstonToLA mixtape this week and we are thrilled to share it with you!
We also caught up with Sophenom to explore her journey in the music industry as one of LA's fresh new female DJ's.
KINGSTONTOLA: Tell us about how you got started at Power 106 and how it has carved out a career for you in music?
DJ Sophenom: I auditioned for The Flava Unit and didn't have any expectations. When I went in for the follow-up interview, I was hired on the spot. Now, I have become a DJ / MC on The Flava Unit and I am working my way up to that dream position. I feel like working on The Flava Unit has shown me that I am not above doing any task and it allows me to look at situations from every angle. This position has really helped with my problem-solving skills and I feel that all of my talents are being utilized so far. I am definitely not getting comfortable and I am working hard to keep pushing for more. I am staying motivated.
KNG2LA: Who are you're biggest influences?
Sophenom: I absolutely love radio culture and I feel really lucky to be able to see what goes on behind the scenes to make the magic happen. There are some really hardworking people in this field: Angie Martinez, J Cruz, Yesi Ortiz, Swedish Egil, Richard Vission, Krystal Bee, Jason Bentley, Raul Campos and Anthony Valdez. I also love all of the female emcees and DJs putting in work!
KNG2LA: What's your favorite thing about playing music?
Sophenom: My favorite thing about playing music is the connection. You feel the connection that the artist has with their emotions when they made the record. Then, you connect with people when you play the record. The best part is that the connection is universal. Let's connect!
KNG2LA: What upcoming projects are you working on? What can we look forward to?
Sophenom: I am currently involved with Traklife Radio and I have a show called The Guestlist that airs on Mondays from 5p-7p on Traklife. Also, I am working with an artist named Lex Lu and she is an amazing emcee! Lex she made me her official DJ, check us out at a show near you! I am also working on a running project with DJ Buddy, so stay tuned for that. Also, during the summer I will be mixing every Tuesday in Laguna Beach! Phew! Bring me coffee!
KNG2LA: Are there any artists that you absolutely have to work with?
Sophenom: Yes! I would love to work with Diplo, MIA, Major Lazer, and NAS. That's all I can think of right now, but I feel like I am always evolving so the list can be updated with time...
KNG2LA: What advice do you have for any new female DJs/artists trying to break into radio?
Sophenom: It is very important to create your own lane and work on your craft! Practice every day, if you don't know something strive to learn it. Don't worry about competition, your time will come.
So there you have it. Some great advice and motivation from the lovely Sophenom. Now listen to this fresh new mixtape while you find your passion and follow your dreams! Way UP!
